Idiomatic phrases – Király (this is very loose slang to use when you like something)

May I take a photograph? – Készíthetek egy fányképet?

{How to toast in a given language} – Before drinks Hungarians say: Egészségedre (means for your health). Before start eating: Jó étvágyat (Bon apetite)

Restaurant – Étterem/Shopping – Vásárlás

How much does this cost? – Ez mennyibe kerül?

Can I pay with a credit card? – Fizethetek hitelkártyával? (Be prepared to pay with cash, it is very different through EU. Especially at smaller shops, restaurants)

I’d like to pay, please. – Fizetni szeretnék.

I would like… {and then point to menu!  Makes ordering easy!} – Szeretnék egy… {and then point to menu!  Makes ordering easy!}

Water (and how to make sure it is not carbonated!) Víz

carbonated water – szénsavas ásványvíz

not carbonated – szénsavmentes ásványvíz (usually this bottle will have a pink stipe on the label, but there might be exceptions)

Wine – Bor

Beer – Sör

Soda – in Hungary people often distinguish between carbonated and not carbonated soft drinks

Carbonated soft drink – szénsavas üdítő (Coke and Pepsi with brown color often referred as kóla, Fanta is often referred as narancs kóla)

Not carbonated soft drink (juice in the US) – szénsavmentes üdítő

Beef – Marha

Chicken – Csirke

Fish – Hal

Pasta – Tészta

Bread – Kenyér

Roll – Zsemle

Bun – Kifli

and some other basic foods in each language.

Meat – Hús

Soup – Leves (Then you can combine: Chicken meat soup – Csirkehúsleves…)

Dressing (on salad) – Öntet

Dipping – Mártás

Turkey – Pulyka

Any kind of sliced meat you would put onto a sandwich – Felvágott (You can combine here, too: Pulyka felvágott)

Cheese – Sajt

Spicy (Hot) – Csípős

Sour – Savanyú

Sweeet – Édes

Sugar – Cukor

Salt – Só

Sausage – Kolbász (Gyulai kolbász is a must try, if you like spicy ask for Csípős Gyulai kolbász… Again combine the words…)

Salami – Szalámi (Pick szalámi is a must try)Egg – Tojás

Milk – Tej

Coffee – Kávé

Breaded (something) – Rántott (something) … (Here you can combine again: Breaded Chicken Meat is Rántott Csirke Hús…)

Steamed – Párolt

Boiled – Főtt OR Főzött

Rakott krumpli (delicious layered potato plate with sour cream, sausage, cheese, etc.)

Paprikás krumpli (special paprika flavored potato with various type of meat)

Gulyás leves (probably most famous Hungarian meal, this is a special soup with vegetables and meat. Once you try….)

Dessert – Édesség

Utensil – Evőeszköz

Spoon – Kanál

Fork – Villa

Knife – Kés

This food is delicious! – Ez az étel nagyon finom!

Where is the… {place you are looking for}? – Hol van… {place you are looking for}?

Can you show me on the map how to get there? – Meg tudnád mutatni a térképen hogyan jutok el oda?

Can you show me where ______ is on the map? – Meg tudnád mutatni, hogy hol van _________ a térképen?

Where is the restroom? – Hol van a WC (WC pronounced as vécé)? OR Hol van a mosdó? (The latter was nicer reference)

How do I get a taxi? – Hogyan tudok hívni egy taxit?

Where can I find a bus? – Hol találok egy buszmegállót (bus stop)? OR Hol találok egy buszpályaudvart (bus station)? (In Hungary it is common to be able to get onto a bus at a local bus station)

Where can I find the Metro? – Hol van a metró?

Where is the airport? – Hol van a repülőtér?

Can you take me to {location} – El tudnál vinni a {location}

I’m an American Citizen. – Amerikai állampolgár vagyok

I’m allergic to __________. – Allergiás vagyok a  _________. (I ignored here the Hungarian grammar as that is too complex to cover here)
